I recently tweeted about how advisors need to get outside their comfort zone and look to other disciplines to grow as advisors, business owners and people. Advisors have a number of great resources in the profession to grow and I take advantage of them. In order to continue to grow and be truly great we need to look outside our profession to see how others are doing great things. So here is a quick compilation of some of the books I have recently read, and podcasts that I frequently listen. If you want to see my original list from last year, click on this link here.
Books I’ve Read Recently
Traction by Gino Wickman – If you run a business or a part of a business this is the book for you. For setting goals, to evaluating staff, to staying the course this book is a helpful guide to organize, develop and grow your organization. I spend at least 15 minutes a day re-reading key sections. Lots to digest and my #1 book of the year.
Delivering Happiness by Tony Hsieh – This is the story of Tony his journey to becoming the CEO of Zappos. If you are looking to create a client first culture, this is the book for you. I’ve used many ideas in this book to give our employees influence on what Affinity’s culture should be and how our clients should be treated.
The Untethered Soul by Michael Singer – Not something that I would usually read. This book discusses and give solid information how to be more self-aware and how to quiet the voices inside our own head that lead to anxiety, self-doubt and self-worthlessness.
Untangled by Lisa Damour – I recently re-read this as my teenage daughters continue to grow and it is a priceless treasure trove on keeping lines of communication open and continuing to connect. I also find that a lot of the techniques in this book help with my professional relationships as well.
My Current Podcast Playlist
UnPodcast by Scott Stratten & Alison Kramer – I loved his book UnMarketing and the podcast is like an updated version of the book. If you love learn on how to grow your company, listen to this podcast.
On Your Mark, Get Set, Grow by Steve Sanduski – You might know Steve from his time at Ron Carson’s firm or his current coaching company Belay Advisors. I think Steve is one of the best interviewers around and in this podcast he interviews many people from all sorts of businesses and how they are achieving great things.
The James Altucher Show – If you like counter-intuitive thinking and someone who shares both his massive successes and failures, this is the podcast for you.
I could go on and on but I think that this is a good start if you are looking for something to read or listen too. Please let me know what has made an impression on you.
